Illustration Friday: Sticky

I’ve never seen a bear do this in the wild. In fact, I’ve never seen a bear in the wild. For that matter, I’ve never seen a wild beehive, either. But I’ve read The Story of Pooh many times before. This is exactly what I believe bears should be doing all the time: raiding beehives and foraging blackberries and slapping salmon out of the water. Of course, bears eat what they can, because honey and blackberries and salmon aren’t always in supply. Have you seen Grizzly Man?

  1. I have seen that movie. It was interesting. I had conflicting emotions at the end. I thought some of the best points were made by the native museum curator and that bear biologist. Some of the filmmaking didn’t quite float my boat, but it was still a thought-provoking movie. What did you think? Oh, and I guess I should say I love this — and those snazzy sun prints. What a cool mom you must be to have!

  2. You have such a fine technique. I love the treatment of the trees, using the green to define their shapes and markings. The sparing use of color on the bear makes it appear washed in sunlight as it ravishes the bee hive…great use of color placed at the focal point. Your linework is great too! We have all kinds of wild creatures in the woods that surround our property, but I’ve only seen a bear once. That doesn’t mean it doesn’t see me more often;> Black bears tend to be shy and want to avoid confrontations with people, but I’m happy I haven’t had a face to face opportunity to find out! Anyway…great piece. I always love what I see here:>

  3. i absolutely love this! what fantastic colors you have chosen! did you do this in marker? i’ve never seen “grizzly man”, i haven’t seen a bear in the wild, or a honey bee hive in the wild for that matter, but i love pooh…i love the original aa milne books best though.

  4. Thank you for your comments! Melanie, I draw with pen and ink, then use a combination of guache and watercolor to fill in color where I need it. And yes, only the Milne Pooh books are in our home 😉
